While La Palma is struggling to restrain the lava, and the rest of Europe is contemplating the new proposed standard for charging mobile devices, many people are anxiously looking at the German elections this Sunday, leading up to the succession of Angela Merkel.
And event though our team went nose deep into Money20/20 Europe in Amsterdam this week (see here), we are back with the news in fintech, exploring the latest news, investments, reports and opinions on fintech, cybersecurity, cryptos, banking, partnerships, payments and more! Highlights from last weeks news related to fintech

  • China’s central bank stated that all cryptocurrency-related transactions are illegal in the country and they must be banned, citing concerns around national security and “safety of people’s assets
  • Remitly, the Seattle fintech company that competes with Western Union WU and lets consumers make international money transfers through an app, saw its shares rise 13% on its first day as a public company
  • Deutsche Bank has acquired Berlin-based payment service provider Better Payment to expand its market share in the fast growing market for online payment processing and acceptance
  • Revolut, the global fintech player valued at $33 billion, will soon offer commission-free stock trading to U.S. customers for the first time
  • InvestaX launches exchange in the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) sandbox, providing key infrastructure for bringing liquidity to digital securities
  • British financial technology firm Wise debuted an investments feature this week that lets users invest in stocks through multiple currencies and spend their holdings
  • Robinhood is reportedly testing a cryptocurrency wallet and transfer features, it allows users to store all of the digital currencies, protected by a private key

This week’s prominent fundings are shared by multiple sectors, including NFT, trading, fintech, investment, open-banking, savings, mining and more:
  • Sorare (Paris, France), a soccer-focused NFT trading platform, has announced a $680 million (€579.4m) Series B fundraise led by SoftBank
  • Airwallex (San Francisco, CA, US), a fintech platform, raised US$200M (€170.4m) in Series E funding
  • 3TS Capital Partners (Vienna, Austria), a European technology-focused growth capital investor, held the first closing of its Fund IV with a target size of €150m
  • TrueLayer (London, UK), which provides technology for developers to enable a range of open-banking-based services has raised $130 million (€110.7m) in a funding round
  • Pacaso (San Francisco, CA, US), a real estate platform for people to buy and co-own a second home, raised $125m (€106.5m) in Series C funding
  • Neo Financial (Calgary, AB and Winnipeg MB), a financial technology company, raised $64m (€54.5m) in Series B funding
  • Other interesting funding rounds for this week: Measurab $50m (€42.6m), Self Financial $50m (€42.6m), Open Mineral $33m (€28.1m), BOTS €13m

Discover Perfect Pitch | Sibos - 13th October 2021
Sibos 2021 sees the second edition of the Discover Perfect Pitch competition, a challenge with a twist giving fintechs from around the globe the opportunity to showcase their products and services to the Sibos community.
Once again, entrants can select from nine categories across three streams – Leadership, Society & Sustainability and Partnership & Collaboration. Fintechs will have to make an upfront decision by selecting which category best aligns to their business, values and principles.
Those who qualify for the competition will be asked to answer a series of questions and submit a pitch video to be evaluated by a panel of experts from across the financial industry, from banks, to venture capitalists, futurists and innovators. The panel will select the best nine entries for the live final, hosted on 13 October 2021, the Wednesday of Sibos week.
